Stereotypes don’t cry
Workshop Description
Let’s question the visual world in which we live
A ready-made opinion and an easy shortcut, the stereotype becomes ingrained in people’s minds and tends to reduce individual differences by simplifying reality. The word is derived from two Greek words: “tupos” (impression, printed image) and “stereos” (solid, persistent, tenacious).
Rudimentary and devoid of critical thinking, it is generally degrading, even humiliating, and can prove dangerous. By focusing on the difference between “them” and “us,” the stereotype fuels isolationism, racism, sexism, and ageism. It stigmatizes social groups, religions, ethnic origins, accents or physical appearances.
Whether explicit or implicit, clichés are part of our toolkit, but by examining specifics rather than generalizations, we will question our visual environment in order to better deconstruct them. Through critical gaze, we will introduce paradoxes and slip disruptive elements into the collective iconographic repertoire.
Educational Goal
To take a critical look at our own graphic vocabulary.
To question our use of stereotypes and open up the debate.
To celebrate diversity.
