Photo-Graphic Narratives for Responsible Food Consumption

Workshop Description

The cultivation of food has long been a cornerstone of human civilization, while the trade of food has enabled cultural exchange and global exploration. Beyond nourishment, food also serves as a catalyst for social connection and cultural identity. At the same time, contemporary food production, distribution, and consumption raise pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges.

This workshop invites students to explore the human–food relationship through visual storytelling. Participants will create photo-graphic narratives tracing the journey of food from cultivation to consumption, highlighting its broader social, cultural, and economic impacts on diverse communities.

Students will be introduced to Photo-Graphic, a design approach that combines typography and imagery to create layered meaning through juxtaposition and synthesis. Through guided exercises, participants will investigate how objects, lines, shapes, color, scale, and texture within a frame can direct attention and shape narrative flow. The workshop theme, Responsible Food Consumption, encourages exploration of sustainability, waste, labor, cultural practices, and ethical decision-making through visually compelling storytelling.

By the end of the workshop, each student will produce a twelve-page accordion book that conveys the emotional, social, and ecological dimensions of their food narratives.

Educational Goal

• Develop visual storytelling through photo-graphic narrative construction
• Explore relationships between typography and image to create layered meaning
• Experiment with photographs, illustrations, pictograms, and graphic elements
• Construct narrative sequencing across a multi-page accordion format
• Communicate social, cultural, economic, and ecological aspects of food systems
• Create a cohesive visual language that supports conceptual clarity

Students will integrate text (letters, words, and sentences) with imagery to create continuity and rhythm across pages. The goal is to develop a unified visual experience in which photographs and graphic elements work together to drive the narrative forward.
