State of Play: A Play-First Toy Design Workshop

Workshop Description

Designing toys and playful objects requires more than just technical skill it requires a playful mind.
This workshop is an invitation to use playful thinking as your primary design tool. We are moving beyond "form follows function" to explore a world where curiosity, humor, and play value lead the way.

In this workshop, you won’t just design a toy; you will "play with design” through sketching, "fast & dirty" prototyping, and the refinement of minimalist concepts, you will experience what it means to design from a state of play embracing limitations, improvising with materials, and finding the "simple magic" in your ideas.

Educational Goal

Our mission is to use playfulness as a methodology to stimulate the creative mind. You will learn to use playful design thinking tools like "Thinking by making" and "Curiosity in Motion". By the end of the workshop, you will translate these methodologies into a simple, tangible toy proving that the best design happens when you're having fun.

Requirements

The workshop is open to students with a 'hands-on' creative approach and a 'maker’s spirit' who are eager to think with their hands and build quick physical prototypes and design toys.
